Album Review

Romanza is designed to break Andrea Bocelli into the American market, not only to the European audience (most of the album is in Italian), but also the English-speaking mainstream pop audience (through the Sarah Brightman duet “Time to Say Goodbye”). The result is an accessible, well-crafted, and melodic pop record from a terrific operatic vocalist — it’s an album that very well could broaden his audience.

Released: Mar 05, 1999

Album Review

Sogno consists entirely of new compositions, much of which are deliberately skewed toward the pop audience whom Andrea Bocelli was well on his way to earning in the spring of 1999. In other words, it’s an album that seems to be a progression, at least on the surface, but it’s also a consolidation of the crossover audience that he wooed over the course of the late ’90s. Sogno pulls off that trick, balancing Bocelli’s opera background with modern pop and Italian music. That stance alone — finding a middle ground between classical and modern pop music — will alienate the purists (who, truth be told, haven’t been all that thrilled with Bocelli in the first place), but this doesn’t discredit the music. True, there are moments on Sogno that don’t work as well as others, but overall it flows nicely and maintains a fine balance between pieces that suggest opera without actually being opera, and adult contemporary songs such as “Nel Cuore Lei” (a duet with Eros Ramazzotti) or the Celine Dion duet “The Prayer,” which was originally featured on the soundtrack for The Quest for Camelot. The most interesting moments are songs like “Come Un Fiume Tu,” a collaboration with Ennio Morricone that manages to not only find a middle ground between those two extremes, but to push forward, as well. Songs like these keep Sogno fascinating, but it’s the adult contemporary-flavored numbers that stand to bring in a larger, pop-oriented audience, who will then likely explore the rest of Bocelli’s catalog. For skeptics, however, the very presence of pop-leaning numbers will confirm their doubts.

Released: Nov 09, 1999

℗ 2003 Decca Music Group Limited

Album Review

Sacred Arias followed Andrea Bocelli’s successful mainstream effort Sogno by a matter of months — a release strategy that suggests he wanted to shore up his classical audience after a pop-leaning effort. That’s nonsense, however. For lack of a better term, Sacred Arias is a holiday album, released in November, just in time for Christmas. For much of Bocelli’s audience, given that the arias are religious songs, they are holiday songs as well — after all, Ave Maria, which leads off the album, is an integral part of the holiday season, and “Silent Night” and Adeste Fideles are also here. But Sacred Arias is more than just a holiday record. It contains other arias that aren’t specifically about Christmas, plus selections like Wagner’s Der Engel, which isn’t religious. Nevertheless, the album holds together fairly well, since the arrangements are of a piece, and Bocelli performs each in his signature style. He may not offer new interpretations of these standards, nor is his phrasing particularly unique, but nevertheless, he does deliver spirited performances of strong, albeit familiar, music in a way that’s accessible to a wide audience. That’s reason enough for fans to add this to their collections, especially as it is his first collection of arias and religious music. [The 2003 edition of Sacred Arias, Rovi

Editorial Reviews

Stacy Kent has a voice like the great Dinah Washington’s, immediate in its grab of the ear and incisive in its tonal shape. Kent’s middle range has a washing quality that pushes the edges forward, even as the edges lilt upward or warble excitedly. Kent and her British band-virtual unknowns prior to this debut-are sure to splash big, with their spare ballad approach (as on Duke Ellington and Bob Russell’s “I Didn’t Know About You”) or their rumbling swing on George Gershwin’s “They All Laughed.” Pianist David Newton glides across melodies with a light touch but then launches sparkling solos full of funky harmonics-hear “The Tender Trap” for Kent and Newton’s mix of charming voice and odd pianism. The band is creative enough to feel at ease reaching into great instrumental passages, giving Kent a first-class platform from which to cue up phrasing that nods to Ella Fitzgerald and a unique, fetching overall style all her own. -Andrew Bartlett ~ Amazon.com

Description: Critics have been up in arms at Baz Lurhmann and Jay-Z’s decision to use contemporary music in “The Great Gatsby.” That criticism is somewhat unfounded, as songs by even the most “contemporary” artists (Lana Del Rey) actually work quite nicely in the movie. Even if those artists did distract from the jazzy-ness of the movie, however, one featured performer stands boldly in opposition to the trendiness of the overall soundtrack: Bryan Ferry (and his orchestra) not only completed a masterful rework of Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” for the movie, they also contributed a great deal of jazz to the project.

The Bryan Ferry Orchestra recorded jazz versions of will.i.am’s “Bang Bang,” Jay-Z’s “100$ Bill,” Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful,” Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black,” and, of course, “Crazy in Love.”

℗ 2013 222 Records

Editorial Reviews

EMMY, TONY, and Golden Globe-nominated star Matthew Morrison is to release a new studio album, Where It All Began, on June 4, 2013. Featuring a collection of classic standards, many of which were first made famous in Broadway musicals. Morrison turned to legendary producer Phil Ramone (Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett), along with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Gregg Field, to create the 12 songs featured on the album. The collection marks the first release from 222 Records, the newly formed label from Adam Levine.

Morrison’s new album of standards is a salute to the music that means the most to him and follows on the release of his 2011 self-titled solo pop album. On Where It All Began, it was paramount for Morrison that he put his own stamp on the songs, either by coming up with new tempos and arrangements or by recreating the song in a way it had never been imagined before. Together, with Phil Ramone, the pair re-envisioned the tracks featured, while still embracing what made these standards classics in the first place.

Album Review

Even as “the fourth tenor” has become one of the world’s most popular and renowned classical and operatic singers, Andrea Bocelli has been teasing pop fans over the years by recording brilliant duets with the likes of Celine Dion and Sarah Brightman. Who better to helm the Tuscan-born vocal giant’s first pure pop album than David Foster, who has made foreign language singing all the rage by introducing the world to Josh Groban? Amore features songs from various musical eras, from the 1920s through the ’80s, which Bocelli sings in his native Italian, Spanish, and French. He launches the collection with beautiful Spanish on the tender, soaring ballad “Amapola” and a graceful “Besame Mucho” before introducing his facility for French with the lush, film score-like “Les Feuilles Mortes,” which becomes “Autumn Leaves.” Foster then unleashes a successful Santana-styled duet approach on the singer, pairing him with Kenny G (“Mi Manchi”), a delightfully torchy Christina Aguilera (on “Somos Novios,” which became “It’s Impossible”) and Stevie Wonder (who adds vocals and harmonica to “Canzoni Stonate”). Purists may balk at such tandems, but pop fans will be enchanted, and Foster handles the productions of these tracks with admirable restraint. Though he covers artists ranging from Edith Piaf to Luis Miguel and Frank Sinatra, the most engaging reworking is a sweet take on “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” which was recorded live at Lake Las Vegas. In typical Foster’s tug-the-heartstrings fashion, the disc closes with Italian and English versions of the inspirational ballad “Because We Believe,” but for the most part, this magical effort fully realizes its aim to become a trendsetter for romantic pop in the 2000s.

Album Review

Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli’s first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly aClassical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli’s first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade and a half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on “Time to Say Goodbye.” His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on “The Prayer.” Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include “La Voce del Silenzio”; “Dare to Live (Vivere),” a duet with Italian pop star Laura Pausini; “A Te,” which features Kenny G on saxophone; “Io Ci Sarò,” a David Foster co-write that features Lang Lang on piano; and “Bellissime Stelle.” While many of songs compiled on Vivere are no doubt already familiar (if not overly familiar) to Bocelli fans, especially those from Romanza and Sogno, the new recordings are substantial enough to make this compilation a rewarding listening experience for fans regardless of its redundancies. As for neophytes, Vivere is an ideal introduction to Bocelli’s classical crossover work. While Romanza and Sogno are still great entry points and are perhaps the better albums from the standpoint of stylistic consistency, the wide range of musical styles showcased on Vivere makes it a great summary of Bocelli’s album output to date. Album Review

Here it is: the debut album by the winner of 2005′s Nashville Star competition. His prize was a contract with RCA Nashville. Given the music biz hype surrounding the show, it’s no secret that his first single “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” was a hit and garnered lots of interest at radio. But there’s another reason for that, too: it’s a great tune — and it was self-penned. But that’s really just the beginning. Chris Young has one of those classic country voices that is memorable after one hears it the first time, like Keith Whitley, George Strait, Clint Black, and Ronnie Milsap. The record opens with “Beer or Gasoline,” a loud country rocker, and slips effortlessly into “You’re Gonna Love Me,” a straightforward up-tempo country love song. By the time “Drinkin’ Me Lonely’” comes up on the player, the album is in full swing. It’s a song Merle Haggard would have been proud to write. Other notable cuts here include the rollicking wildness of “Lay It on Me,” and the slippery love song “Center of My World.” There are plenty of bad boy rockers to accompany the ballads, which makes for an auspicious debut. The only complaint is Buddy Cannon’s production. It’s so huge and compressed it makes the album sound generic even if the songs aren’t — fiddles sound more like synths, the guitars all sound like they were recorded the late ’70s, and the drums all have so much reverb on them, they sound more like programmed beats than an actual drumkit. The production will date this record instead of making it sound timeless like the great country albums that Young seems to adore given his classic writing style. Still, it’s a first record, and Young is the real thing. It’s no fluke he won the competition, and from the sound of this set, he’s in it for the long haul.

Released: Aug 27, 2009

℗ 2009 Sony Music

Album Review

Since Chris Young appeared on the Nashville Star television program in 2006, he’s been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with “Drinkin’ Me Lonely,” his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of The Man I Want to Be in 2009 haven’t done too badly, either, getting plenty of play on radio. Young co-wrote “Voices,” and “Gettin’ You Home,” creating a buzz surrounding the album’s release — and rightfully so. While Young’s sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it’s also a lot more hardcore honky tonk than it is refried ’70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians in the recording process, giving the disc a more organic sound that a lot of what’s out there. Young’s writing talents aren’t confined to the singles either; he co-wrote another of the best tracks here — the stellar hillbilly anthem and album opener “That Makes Me.” Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: “Rose in Paradise” is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It’s a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White’s “Rainy Night in Georgia.” Its beauty lies in its arrangement. Young understands the soulful nuances in the tune, but still does it his own way. His reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable with sparse, stripped down arrangements; and rather than stick with his trademark baritone, his stretches his vocal range — including a mean falsetto — to the brink and still pulls it all off. The Man I Want to Be is definitely a cut above what’s currently out there; it’s sophisticated, disciplined, passionate, sincere, and clever.

Released: Jul 11, 2006

℗ 2006 Vanguard Records, A Welk Music Group Company.

Album Review

Through Toledo starts with the melancholic “Sing, Theresa Says” that has Greg Laswell delivering the song with the care of a lullaby, but his voice is an acquired taste like that of Lyle Lovett or Chris Isaak. It’s lo-fi indie pop that consists of a short, punchy backbeat and high female harmonies hovering above. Meanwhile, “Amazed” is a lush, rich piece of pop that glides along effortlessly before breaking out and turning the amp up a notch or three. At times Laswell sounds too smart for his own good, with the winding “Worthwhile” coming across as too busy and less than worthwhile, while veering off in several different direction and tones at the same time. The same can be said for the dreary “I’m Hit.” He redeems himself with the fine “Do What I Can” that brings to mind Coldplay. The longer the album goes on, the more Laswell shows his strengths as a very credible singer/songwriter, particularly on the piano-fuelled “High and Low” which is easily comparable to Keane’s “Try Again” with its subtle but dramatic string accents. The ambling, relaxing, and soothing title track is a winner from the opening as the musician is in no hurry to get things to a higher pace or tempo, coming off as a jazzy jewel. He returns to this well once too often during “Come Undone” and things never quite come together again.

Released: Jul 08, 2008

℗ 2008 Vanguard Records.

Editorial Reviews

Pointing out that alto nido translates from the Spanish as high nest, Laswell explains that Three flights up implies that you re on your way to a high nest, even if you re not quite there yet. Whereas Through Toledo was intimate and autobiographical for the most part, the EP reflected the transitional time of coming out of it, Laswell explains. With this album, I wanted to do something really big sounding a little bit bigger than I am, really. In a sense, the album was shaped around the fact that 2007 was a difficult and strange year for just about all of my friends and family members.

With his elegantly expressive piano technique and feathery acoustic guitar work, Greg has drawn comparisons to such reputable songsmiths as Jeff Buckley, Coldplay, Ron Sexsmith and Radiohead. His intense lyrics and sweeping melodies amplify to create an eloquent sound that matches his hypnotic and haunting tenor.

As with his prior Vanguard releases, Three Flights From Alto Nido was written, recorded and produced at his home studios in San Diego, Dana Point and Santa Ana, CA. The task of mixing the album was placed in the hands of Greg Collins who has mixed, produced and/or engineered tracks for Grammy winners U2, Joss Stone and the Dixie Chicks as well as many other notable acts.

Editorial Reviews

Grateful singers know that Fred Astaire virtually defined the Great American Songbook, beginning in the ’30s with his legendary film collaborations with George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern. Stacey Kent pays tribute to Astaire in Let Yourself Go, the third stellar album for the London-based, New York-bred vocalist whose voice resembles a lighter version of Dinah Washington’s. Kent shines on both gorgeous ballads (“They Can’t Take That Away from Me”) and solid swingers (“Shall We Dance”), and adds an easy bossa nova beat to “‘S Wonderful.” Trading lines with her is Kent’s saxophonist-husband Jim Tomlinson, who fronts the solid band. Flexible with the rhythms yet never straying far from the melodies, Kent also pays perhaps the ultimate compliment to many of these songs by including the oft-neglected verses. Tony Bennett’s 1993 Fred Astaire tribute was his breakthrough to the mainstream music scene. Perhaps Let Yourself Go will be the U.S. breakthrough for Stacey Kent. -David Horiuchi
